A bicycle is an Incredible Machine

Image
A bicycle is an Incredible Machine A bicycle is a fascinating machine with many parts – so many, in fact, that a lot of people never actually learn the names and just point to an area on their bike when something goes wrong. But whether you’re new to bicycles or not, everyone knows pointing isn’t always the most effective way to communicate. You might find yourself walking out of a bike shop with something you didn’t actually want. Ever ask for a new “wheel” when all you really needed was a new tire? Use the photo and descriptions below as your guide. If you do forget the name of a part you’ve always got your finger to help point it out. Essential Bicycle Parts Pedal This is the part that a cyclist places their feet on. The pedal is attached to the crank which is the component that the cyclist rotates to spin the chain which in turn provides the bicycle’s power. Front derailleur The mechanism for changing the front gears by lifting the chain from one chain wheel to another; allows ...

The concept of ‘crab mentality’ comes from the behavior of crabs in a bucket or pot. Any single crab could escape easily, but the others prevent it, and the whole group perishes. Used as a metaphor for human behavior, crab mentality occurs when the group – whether through envy, spite, or competitiveness – undermines and prevents the progress of any members who achieve more success than themselves. The thinking is “If I can’t, you can’t either.” As a result of this dynamic, social change can be very hard to achieve. It takes a lot of effort and energy to break free from the ‘keep quiet and don’t rock the boat’ mentality of the crab pot. We might consciously disagree with many things the group thinks and does, but we feel too uncomfortable to speak up. It is so easy to be pulled back into the familiar crab pot, remaining silent about the issues in the world around us. The pullback is very strong, and the world outside seems too visceral and dangerous to go it alone. Social conformity i...

Remove Your Fear of Public Speaking by FahimsCanvas

“Nothing is more important than the ability to communicate effectively” -Gerald R. Ford What is public speaking? Public speaking is a process, an act, and an art of making a speech before an audience. Absolutely everyone from the age of 10 to 90 has found themselves in situations where they have had to speak publicly. However, telling an anecdote at a corporate party, introducing yourself in class, or delivering a paper at a conference does not necessarily make you a public speaker.   It is not enough to talk in front of a group of people to be a brilliant public speaker. Your goal should not be limited to informing your audience or expressing your thoughts publicly, but to changing emotions, actions, and attitudes, and to leave your listeners moved by the words and touched by their meaning.   “How to do it?” – has been a question many brilliant speakers have asked themselves. Three Styles of Speech The three most common styles of speeches that you encounter in today’s ...
